Save the glass for the Louvre.
I don’t dislike the concept at all, but I’d rather see it restored to the way it was (with modern construction techniques).

The entire situation makes me feel ill, t
o think that the 800
-year-old N
otre Dame had no fire suppression. All that ancient oak, 1000-year-old timber. And what does, what
did
it stand for in this day and age? And they’ll spend a billion dollars rebuilding it and how many hungry people could eat for that money?

I was feeling like the rebuild should include glass roof, but I’m not sure that this works 100% for me. A pretty good starting point.

what it was is gone, its been repaired and altered numerous times over the last 800 years or whatever. There is no reason to try to repli cate what was there, especially since it will never truly be the same.

The oldest question facing the Catholic church that nobody really wants to talk about.

yea, its surprising that they didn’ t have a suppression system in there. A re you saying they should not repair it and take it all d own? That building also draws many people into the city to spend money in restaurants and shops.

I understand all of that. I can see the arguments on both sides. However, as a building that is such a symbol, I think you try to put the symbol back to its latest iteration, the one people who are alive now will remember. But then again, I’m a(n) historian at heart. We don’t necessarily like change.

but the people who are alive now and who will see the building as it being different than it should be will die off. There will be generations and generations of pe ople who will see the building as it is and it will be normal to them. I think there is something significant about the age of the wood that was lost too that could never be replicated.

Absolutely not. That hideous IMO. No need to ruin a completely good design. Rebuild exactly as it was.

Good article on that Notre-Dame’s Safety Planners Underestimated the Risk, With Devastating Results
Seems like they had three big problems:
The mistaken assumption that big old timbers would burn slowly (seems like mistook taking a long time to burn through completely with tak ing a long time to spread)
T hey devised a plan that involved a slow climb to the roof (and a descent back down) if a fire alarm was triggered. They thought they would have time for this because they were mistaken about how fast the fire would spread, but clearly it was a bad decision on its own.
They didn’t train their security staff to positively identify the source of an alarm whether false or true, so the first alarm was not investigated properly, adding another 30 minutes or so to the delay.

Of course traditionalists freaked out about I.M. Pei’s pyramid as well. I’m not sure a rooftop gard en is the right approach, and I think rebuilding as it was (at least appearance-wise) is a bad idea) but I don’t think the French are wrong to consider something new.

The church isn’t owned by the Catholic Church. It’s owned by the French government

I walked past many Syrian refugee families in the Subway terminal just across the river from Notre Dame last time I was in Paris . I believe it was Châtelet. Kids, parents, grandparents, many of whom were injured begging for food and money.
I’d say a spending all this money to pay lip service to concerns facing the world fits right in with where we’re at as a society.

It’s Paris. People are gonna visit whether Notre Dame is rebuilt or not.
Make the ruins a memorial to the decline of civilization . People will still come to see it.

so what would you do with the building? it is very significant in so many ways, architecturally, religious, as a city symbol... would you, put no money to it, board it up, and let it crumble? The humanitarian issue is very real but i don’ t think that means we shouldn’t fix the building. I don’ t think it is taking money out of an account that would otherwise go to help those peo ple. I’ve heard a lot of it is coming from pri vate donations.

If I was the treasurer for the City of Paris, I’d take all the donations from these rich assholes and use them to help put the poor in the city. Make it into a shelter or a food bank. The Catholic Church was a pretty evil entity back when it was building things like Notre Dame. Maybe its time to start worrying more about people than buildings.
Pretty sure Jesus would approve of this plan. The guy was known to get pretty upset when people treated temples like businesses.
I’ve been there several times. It was beautiful, it spoke to me, but everything dies.

I think of the Frauenkirche in Wuerzburg, which was destroyed in WWII and rebuilt in more modern taste and very nicely done.
If Mankind can’t take care of something like Notre Dame, then perhaps they don’t deserve to have it.
No fire suppression system in the 21st Century? Appalling. Someone should be prosecuted.

I’d suggest using aluminum and steel, since the keepers of that building do not think fire suppression is a worthwhile thing.

On the other hand, Coventry cathedral burned in WWII, the modern rebuild was something that most would not consider a success today:

I like the greenish glass. Only change would be to etch it, and scrap the garden.
